Coastal Hazard Warning Issued for Peninsula and Gulf Country Districts as Tropical Cyclone Narelle Approaches
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a coastal hazard warning for parts of Queensland's Peninsula and Gulf Country districts due to abnormally high tides and damaging surf.
Alert Details
The Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a Coastal Hazard Warning (IDQ21137) for abnormally high tides. This warning is classified as a top priority for immediate broadcast and is currently in a renewal phase as of Saturday afternoon.
Affected Areas
The warning applies to residents in parts of the Peninsula and Gulf Country Forecast Districts in Queensland. Specific geographic focus is placed on the coastline between Mapoon and Pormpuraaw. Locations that may be affected include:
- Weipa
- Aurukun
- Pormpuraaw
- Napranum
- Old Mapoon
What You Should Do
Emergency services advise the following precautions for residents in the warning zone:
- Know your limitations around beaches, tidal rivers, and creeks.
- Adhere to all warnings and instructions from lifesavers and lifeguards.
- If you own a boat or watercraft, haul it out of the water if possible or ensure all moorings are secure.
- Ensure children are kept within arm’s reach at all times when near the water.
Expected Conditions
Elevated sea levels and waves are being generated as Tropical Cyclone Narelle moves westward over the Gulf of Carpentaria. Abnormally high tides are expected, which may lead to sea water flooding of low-lying coastal areas. Tides are likely to rise well above the normal high tide mark. Additionally, damaging surf conditions are possible, which may result in coastal erosion and localized damage to coastal infrastructure.
Timeline
The warning was issued at 4:55 pm AEST on Saturday, March 21, 2026. The most significant impacts from the abnormally high tides are expected during the morning high tide. The Bureau of Meteorology intends to issue the next update by 11:00 pm AEST Saturday.
