A yellow rainfall warning is currently in effect, issued by Environment Canada. The alert was issued due to a prolonged atmospheric river event that is expected to bring significant rainfall totals to the region through Friday morning.

Affected Areas

The warning specifically targets the following geographic regions and communities on West Vancouver Island:

• Port Renfrew
• Bamfield
• Jordan River

Expected Conditions

Residents should prepare for the following conditions:

• Rainfall Totals: Up to 120 mm of rain is expected near Port Renfrew.
• Snowmelt: Freezing levels will remain high, between 2000 to 2500 metres, causing significant snowmelt from higher elevations.
• Hazards: The combination of heavy rain and snowmelt may lead to enhanced river responses and potential flooding. Extensive water pooling on roads, washouts, and an enhanced risk of landslides on steep slopes or deforested areas are possible.

Timeline

Periods of heavy rain will continue through tonight, with the heaviest rainfall expected tonight into Friday morning. The rain is forecast to begin tapering off Friday morning as a cold front sweeps across Vancouver Island. Freezing levels are expected to lower significantly to between 500 and 1000 metres by Saturday.
