Flash Flood Warning Issued for Entire Big Island of Hawaii Through Early Sunday
The National Weather Service has issued a life-threatening Flash Flood Warning for the Big Island of Hawaii as heavy rain triggers stream overflows and road closures.
Alert Details
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the entire island of Hawaii. This alert indicates that flash flooding is currently occurring or imminent, posing a significant threat to life and property.
Affected Areas
The warning covers the entire Big Island of Hawaii within Hawaii County. Radar data and stream gauges indicate widespread impacts across the island, with reports of ongoing flooding in local communities and multiple highway closures.
What You Should Do
Residents and travelers are urged to stay away from streams, rivers, drainage ditches, and culverts, even if they appear dry. Be especially cautious at night when flood dangers are harder to recognize. Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or are under an evacuation order. Additionally, be alert for potential rock and mudslides in areas of steep terrain.
Expected Conditions
At the time of the alert, radar indicated heavy rain falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour. Several stream gauges have remained above flood warning thresholds island-wide. Expected impacts include significant flooding in drainages, roads, and low-lying areas, as well as landslides in steep terrain. The damage threat is considered considerable.
Timeline
The Flash Flood Warning is effective immediately and is scheduled to remain in effect until 1:00 AM HST on March 15, 2026.
