Flood Warning Issued for Kansas City Metro Area and Surrounding Counties Through Wednesday Morning

The National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill MO has issued a Flood Warning for portions of east central Kansas and west central Missouri. This alert, which replaces a previous Flash Flood Warning, was issued as flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to impact the region.

Affected Areas

The warning covers the following geographic regions:

• East Central Kansas: Johnson and Miami counties.
• West Central Missouri: Cass and Jackson counties.

Specific locations that will experience flooding include Kansas City, Overland Park, Olathe, Independence, Lee’s Summit, Shawnee, Lenexa, Leawood, Raytown, Grandview, Belton, Prairie Village, Raymore, Gardner, Merriam, Mission, Spring Hill, Fairway, Mission Hills, and Sugar Creek.

What You Should Do

Residents are advised to “Turn around, don’t drown” when encountering flooded roads, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is significantly harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Avoid low-lying areas and follow all local road closure signs.

Expected Conditions

Local law enforcement reports that flooding is already occurring in the warned area. Between 2.5 and 4 inches of rain have already fallen. While no additional rainfall is expected, flooding impacts will continue for rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone locations. Numerous roads remain closed due to high water levels.
