The warning covers regions in both Illinois and Indiana, specifically including:
- Illinois: Edwards, Gallatin, Wabash, and White Counties.
- Indiana: Gibson, Knox, and Posey Counties.
What You Should Do
Motorists are strictly advised not to attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas. Most flood-related deaths occur in automobiles. Residents should not attempt to cross water-covered bridges, dips, or low water crossings. Never try to cross a flowing stream on foot. To escape rising water, find an alternative route over higher ground.
Expected Conditions
Minor flooding is forecast for the Wabash River at Mount Carmel. As of 9:45 PM EST Thursday, the river stage was 13.6 feet. The river is expected to rise above the flood stage of 19.0 feet late Friday evening. Current projections show the river reaching a crest of 22.7 feet on Thursday, March 12.
At a stage of 22.9 feet, water begins to flow over River Road just north of Fifth Street in the Mount Carmel area.
Timeline
The Flood Warning is effective from Friday evening, March 6, 2026, until further notice. The river is expected to reach its crest during the latter half of next week, around March 12. The National Weather Service expects to issue the next statement on Friday afternoon by approximately 2:00 PM EST.
