The National Weather Service in Duluth, MN, has issued a Heavy Freezing Spray Warning and a Gale Warning for portions of western Lake Superior. These warnings are in effect until 12:00 PM CDT on March 16.
Affected Areas
The warning covers the following maritime zones:
- Silver Bay Harbor to Two Harbors, MN
- Two Harbors to Duluth, MN
- Duluth, MN to Port Wing, WI
- Port Wing to Sand Island, WI
What You Should Do
Mariners are strongly advised to prepare for dangerous ice accumulation on their vessels. If possible, remain in port or seek safe harbor immediately. Those already at sea should avoid the warning area, alter course, or conduct mitigation efforts. Ensure all vessels are secured for hazardous conditions.

- Wind: North winds between 20 and 35 knots.
- Waves: Significant wave heights of 7 to 10 feet.
- Freezing Spray: Heavy freezing spray is expected to accumulate at a rate of 2 cm per hour or greater.
- Impacts: Rapid ice accretion on decks and superstructures can lead to a catastrophic loss of vessel stability. Freezing spray may also cause mechanical and electronic components to become inoperative. Strong winds and high waves may capsize or damage vessels and significantly reduce visibility.
