Red Flag Warning Issued for South-Central Texas Through Monday Evening
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for South-Central Texas due to strong winds and low humidity, creating critical fire weather conditions from Sunday through Monday.
Alert Details
The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio has issued a Red Flag Warning for South-Central Texas. This alert, which replaces the previous Fire Weather Watch, is in effect due to expected critical fire weather conditions caused by strong winds and low relative humidity.
Affected Areas
The warning covers all of South-Central Texas, including the following counties: Llano, Burnet, Williamson, Val Verde, Edwards, Real, Kerr, Bandera, Gillespie, Kendall, Blanco, Hays, Travis, Bastrop, Lee, Kinney, Uvalde, Medina, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Caldwell, Fayette, Maverick, Zavala, Frio, Atascosa, Wilson, Karnes, Gonzales, De Witt, Lavaca, and Dimmit.
What You Should Do
Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution as any fire that develops will catch and spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended during this period. A Red Flag Warning indicates that a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Residents should prepare for these hazardous conditions immediately.
Expected Conditions
Strong to very strong winds and dry air associated with a dryline and cold front will impact the region:
- Winds: West winds at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected Sunday afternoon. Winds will shift to the North at 20 to 35 mph Sunday evening into Sunday night, with gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph.
- Relative Humidity: Levels will drop to between 10 and 25 percent on Sunday and Monday afternoons. Overnight humidity recovery will be poor, rising only to the 25 to 35 percent range Sunday night.
Timeline
The Red Flag Warning is effective from Sunday afternoon, March 15, through Monday evening, March 16, at 8:00 PM CDT.
