Special Marine Warning Issued for Jupiter Inlet to Deerfield Beach FL Through Friday Afternoon
The National Weather Service has issued a Special Marine Warning for Florida coastal waters until 4:00 PM EDT due to severe thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts.
Alert Details
The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a Special Marine Warning for coastal waters in Southeast Florida. The alert was triggered by radar-indicated severe thunderstorms moving through the region capable of producing hazardous maritime conditions.
Affected Areas
The warning covers the following maritime zones:
- Coastal waters from Jupiter Inlet to Deerfield Beach FL out 20 NM
- Waters from Jupiter Inlet to Deerfield Beach FL from 20 to 60 NM
Impacted coastal locations and nearby waters include Delray Beach, Briny Breezes, Gulf Stream, Highland Beach, Ocean Ridge, and Boca Raton.
What You Should Do
Mariners and individuals on the water are urged to seek safe harbor immediately. Thunderstorms can produce sudden waterspouts that can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas. Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves.
If caught on open water, stay below deck if possible and keep away from ungrounded metal objects due to frequent lightning. Mariners should report severe weather to the Coast Guard or the National Weather Service Miami office.
Expected Conditions
At 1:52 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 30 nm east of Palm Beach to 17 nm east of Ocean Ridge, moving east at 5 knots. Primary hazards include:
- Waterspouts: Possible sudden formation capable of overturning vessels.
- Wind: Gusts of 34 knots or greater.
- Hail: Small hail accumulation possible.
- Seas: Suddenly higher waves and locally hazardous sea conditions.
Timeline
The Special Marine Warning is effective immediately as of 1:52 PM EDT and is scheduled to remain in effect until 4:00 PM EDT on March 13, 2026.
