National Weather Service (NWS) Juneau AK has issued a Storm Warning for the coastal waters of Southeast Alaska. The warning is part of a series of escalating marine alerts including Small Craft Advisories and Gale Warnings effective through Sunday evening.
Affected Areas
The alert covers the region from Dixon Entrance to Cape Decision out to 15 nautical miles (NM).
What You Should Do
Mariners are advised to take immediate precautions. The NWS recommends that mariners remain in port, alter course to avoid the storm, and/or secure their vessels for severe conditions. Storm force winds and hazardous seas are capable of capsizing or damaging vessels and significantly reducing visibility.
Expected Conditions
Conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout Sunday. During the peak Storm Warning period, southeast winds of 35 to 45 knots are forecast, with gusts reaching up to 50 knots. Sea heights are expected to range between 12 and 17 feet. Additional gale-force conditions will see gusts as high as 55 knots and seas up to 20 feet later in the day.
