The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Marquette, MI, has issued a Storm Warning for western Lake Superior. This alert follows a Gale Warning that will be in effect earlier in the day. The NWS has categorized this as a severe meteorological event requiring immediate action by those in the affected area.
Affected Areas
The warning covers Lake Superior west of a line extending from Saxon Harbor, Wisconsin, to Grand Portage, Minnesota, specifically for areas beyond 5 nautical miles from the shore.
What You Should Do
Mariners are advised to remain in port. Those currently at sea should alter course and/or secure their vessels immediately to prepare for severe conditions. Storm-force winds and hazardous waves can capsize or damage vessels and significantly reduce visibility.
Expected Conditions
Conditions are expected to deteriorate in two phases:
- Gale Warning Phase: East winds of 25 to 35 knots with gusts up to 45 knots and waves up to 3 feet.
- Storm Warning Phase: East winds increasing to 30 to 40 knots with gusts up to 50 knots. Waves are expected to reach heights of up to 5 feet.

- Gale Warning: In effect from 4:00 PM EST (3:00 PM CST) Tuesday until 10:00 PM EST (9:00 PM CST) Tuesday.
- Storm Warning: In effect from 10:00 PM EST (9:00 PM CST) Tuesday until 7:00 PM EST (6:00 PM CST) Wednesday.
