Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Flinders and Mid North Districts of South Australia
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding across parts of southeastern South Australia, including Port Augusta and Whyalla.
Alert Details
The Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning (IDS21033) for heavy rainfall. This alert is designated as a top priority for immediate broadcast due to the risk of hazardous weather conditions in the region.
Affected Areas
The warning applies to the Flinders district and portions of the Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Mid North, North East Pastoral, and North West Pastoral forecast districts. Specific locations that may be affected by these storms include Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Hawker, Jamestown, and Burra.
What You Should Do
The State Emergency Service (SES) advises residents in the affected areas to take the following safety measures:
- Do not drive, ride, or walk through flood water.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
- Stay indoors and away from windows while thunderstorms are in the vicinity.
Expected Conditions
A trough and cold front moving through the south of the state are interacting with a very humid airmass, generating thunderstorms. These severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding within the warning area. Significant precipitation has already been observed, with 41 mm recorded at Port Augusta in the six hours leading up to 10:00 am.
Timeline
The warning was issued at 10:33 am on Sunday, 22 February 2026. Severe conditions are expected to develop or continue over the next several hours. The Bureau of Meteorology expects to issue the next update by 1:35 pm.
