What Happened

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) has issued a recall for several motorcycle models due to a defect in the steering assembly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a handlebar lock screw may loosen and completely detach from the vehicle.

Which Products Are Affected

The recall impacts approximately 19,406 units. The following models and years are included:

  • Honda CMX300: Model years 2023, 2024, and 2025
  • Honda CMX500: Model years 2023, 2024, and 2025
  • Honda CL500: Model years 2023, 2024, and 2025

What You Should Do

Owners of the affected motorcycles are advised to contact Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870. Honda’s internal identification number for this recall is KUO. Authorized dealers will replace the lock screw and apply a thread lock compound to prevent future loosening, free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by May 8, 2026. Owners can also check if their specific Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is included in the recall by visiting NHTSA.gov starting March 21, 2026.

Why This Matters

If the lock screw detaches, it can become lodged between the motorcycle’s frame and the steering stem. This interference can restrict the rider’s ability to steer the vehicle, significantly increasing the risk of a crash or serious injury.
