Subaru Recalls Over 138,000 Crosstrek and Forester Hybrid Vehicles Due to Fuel Leak and Fire Risk
Subaru is recalling certain 2025-2026 hybrid models because fuel may spill from the filler neck when tanks are full, posing a significant fire hazard.
What Happened
Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain hybrid vehicles due to a defect in the fuel system. According to the report, when the fuel tank is near full capacity, an increase in ambient temperature may cause the fuel to expand and spill out of the filler neck. This is caused by an insufficient seal on the fuel cap.
Which Products Are Affected
A total of 138,306 units are potentially affected by this recall. The specific models include:
- 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
- 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid
Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov as of February 16, 2026.
What You Should Do
Owners are strongly advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the remedy is completed. Additionally, owners should limit their fuel level to 50% capacity to prevent spills.
Subaru dealers will replace the fuel filler cap gasket free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by March 25, 2026. Consumers may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru’s internal designation for this recall is WRD-26.
Why This Matters
The primary concern is safety; a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source significantly increases the risk of a fire, which can lead to property damage or personal injury.
